An Afternoon of #Wonder

After a two year renovation, the Renwick Gallery re-opened its doors with its breakout WONDER exhibit.  Fun side fact: the Renwick was "the first building in the United States designed expressly as an art museum."  The line was wrapped around the block, but thankfully we only waited about 15 minutes (in the rain) before we were in the building.

The first room may look abandoned, but we happened to be the final patrons of our group to walk through these hand sculpted saplings.

Thousands of pieces of string come together to create the second piece.

Everyone was getting their Insta on!
If you came up with a witty comment it would be shown on the screen as you entered the museum.

Anyone need an index card?  The larger than life sculptures reminded me of the tufas in Mono Lake.

Can't take this kid anywhere.

As quickly as we moved through the first floor, we had to wait our turn once we got upstairs; there were so many of us that we wrapped around the room twice.

John Grade recreated an old hemlock tree in the Cascade Mountains.  The piece was made from reclaimed cedar and once the exhibit is over, the wood will return to the mountains where the pieces will decompose.  Photo credit goes to Dan, because I was a bit too short.

Chesapeake watershed made from marbles anyone?

Another photo credit for Dan.  There were tires on tires on tires.

The big finale was a room completely decorate in bugs.  Yup you read that right, bugs.  The walls pink color even comes from the shell of some female bug I cannot remember.
