A Day in the Life: John Fetterman

If you remember all the way back to MLK Day in January I had briefly mentioned John Fetterman, Braddock's Mayor.  Emma, a PHC member, found a short HULU documentary that not only talks about his work, but also the history and future plans of Braddock.  While it is a short piece, he does a great job talking about the different socioeconomic factors which led to the fall of this once booming steel town.

Girlfriend, Show Me the Money

Sorry I have been so MIA lately - my entrance exams for school have pretty much consumed me and left little time for anything, but studying.  In honor of Suze Orman I decided this article would be worth sharing with all of you. 

Today NPR published an article that looked at how curbing the nation's overweight/obesity problem can save billions of dollars each year. A recent study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine showed that by cutting the rate of obesity by 1% each year over the next two decades, the US would save $85 billion in health care costs.  If the obesity rates hold stead over the next twenty years it could save nearly $550 billion. 

Information coming out over the last month or so has shown that obesity rates have leveled off in some groups.  While this is a start, if major changes do not continue nearly 42 percent of adults will be considered obese by 2030. 

"The findings are meant to be a call to action, as experts gathered at the CDC conference consider how best to to combat obesity, a public health problem that affects about 78 million adults and 12.5 million children and adolescents."

PGH Marathon

Today most of Pittsburgh was closed down for both the half-marathon and marathon runs.  This morning 25,000 people showed up for the 7:30.  I had bought a spot in the race, but due to my impending microbio exam I decided that my time would be better spent at home studying instead of hitting the road.  The beginning of the race did snake through the North Side so I did run down the street to cheer on the runners with some other spectators.
