AmeriCorps Week

If you did not know, this week is AmeriCorps Week.  There have been a variety of events going on here in Pittsburgh and the nice thing is that it has gotten many of us out of the office and an opportunity to catch up with some of the other members.

Today we headed north to work with North Hills Community Outreach, to work in their community garden.  The organization helps struggling families and individuals by supplying two food pantries, helping people with utilities, Family Savings Accounts and running employment coaching (just to name a few).  Last year they were able to start the Rosalinda sauro Sirianni garden which grows fresh, organic produce for the North Hills community.  In the first year they grew over 3,000 pounds which was given away.  A few months ago they bought the parcel of land next to the garden which will allow them to expand their garden.  We also found out that The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation will be donating several fruit trees and allow them to increase the amount of produce they will be able to give away.

We definitely had our work cut out for us as we were responsible for clearing the area where the new fruit trees will be planted.  Lots of manual labor, but the weather was AMAZING so none of us minded.

Here are some pictures from today.

The just a portion of the pile of branches/trees we ended up moving!!
